millipede

A quote by Jean-Jacques Rousseau says "The more ingenious and accurate our instruments, the more unsusceptible and inexpert become our organs".  I just love that.  On one hand we can learn so much from electronics and machinery but there is nothing like getting out into nature and exploring and learning things for ourselves, using our senses.

Today I decided we would stop and observe the first moving creature we came across.  Tabor lifted a log and was excited to see a millipede.  We flipped over a couple more pieces of wood and found a number of millipedes under each.  After watching for a while I got them thinking by asking questions like...
-why do you think they live under wood?
-do they live alone or with family?
- what is around here for them to eat?
-what does it do all day?

They were intrigued and had a lot of good ideas.  After making our own observations we came home and looked up about millipedes.  This kind of learning worked great for our family.  The kids found what they were interested in and then we spent time learning about it.
